Jim DeMint is Right

Reports The Daily Caller (emphasis mine):

South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint is just saying “no” to compromise with liberals.

“I can guarantee you the [Super Bowl] coaches are not telling their players to go out on the field and cooperate and compromise with the other team…”

In the South Carolina senator’s Super Bowl analogy of Washington, the two teams are divided along ideological, yet incompatible lines.

“One team believes in centralized economic and political power, collective planning, concentration here in Washington,” DeMint explained. “The other team — while it has been maybe erratic in supporting those principles we believe in — believes in the decentralized, individualistic approach to America.

DeMint added:

“It is very difficult to compromise with another team that does not have the same goal of limited government, individual liberty.”

Sen. DeMint is absolutely right that faced with a $15.2 trillion debt that President Obama wants to take to over $16 trillion and beyond, there can be no compromise with the other team, the Democratic Party, which seems hell-bent on taking America over a cliff.

But when the Senator notes that the GOP has been “erratic in supporting those principles we believe in,” “erratic” might be putting it mildly.

Ron Paul has offered $1 trillion in cuts in one year. Mitt Romney has offered no substantive cuts. The same is true of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. Said Sarah Palin on FOX News last week:

(Ron Paul) is the only one who has been so adamantly passionate about doing something about the suffocating debt, about doing something about reining in government growth and actually slashing budgets - $1 trillion a year, he’s been specific about until we get our hands around this…

One can point out that Romney, Gingrich and Santorum are all guilty in ways that are more similar than various in growing government–TARP, individual health mandates, Medicare Plan D, No Child Left Behind, and the list goes on…

But let us suspend disbelief and pretend that Romney, Gingrich and Santorum are somehow at least nominally conservative despite having little in their records to support this claim. The campaign season is when politicians are supposed to lie to us. Yet, even in the heat of this election, Romney, Gingrich and Santorum have offered zero cuts. Nothing. Nada.

So what do we expect these guys to do when they get into office? The election is when candidates are supposed to be promising voters the moon. Well, I suppose Gingrich did promise the moon.

Palin is right that Ron Paul is the “only one” who offers a plan to accomplish what virtually every conservative believes is a top priority–cutting spending and reducing the size of government.

Sen. DeMint is absolutely correct that there can be no compromise with the other team. The problem is for most of their careers, Romney, Gingrich and Santorum might as well have been playing for the other team.

The Daily Caller adds of DeMint:

“I don’t think we can take four more years of what we are doing right now and expect this country to be anything like we want it to be in the future…”

Sen. DeMint is absolutely right. America cannot withstand another four years of Obama. It also cannot withstand a Republican version of him.

Said DeMint two weeks ago: “If Republicans don’t understand the important aspects of what Ron Paul is saying, we won’t be able to exist as a party…”

Once again, Sen. DeMint is right.
